Early Projects

The Nuance Program was started in the Gorman residence hall of the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The Founder of the program, Lester Williams, a student and dorm resident, was inspired by an event on campus following the 1986 World Series. The event was an experience of racist attacks by fellow students.  From this violent experience Mr. Williams went on to form the Nuance program. The purpose of the program was to create an environment  where students can recognize the unique differences among fellow residents and to use these differences as the foundation for the learning and sharing of each others beautiful cultures. The Nuance Program carries as one of UMASS’ first multicultural and residential programs on campus.

The Darfur Project began as a campaign to gather support through signatures and to inform the public of the genocidal conditions in Darfur, Sudan. The campaign, which was organized by the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee, became a great collaboration in which Lester Williams and Imani McFarlane, went form soliciting pedestrians and business owners, who supported through signatures and sponsorship.  The reaction of the grass roots community was so great, the Boston Globe covered the story in their world page section. The campaign went on to the march on Washington D.C, where the theme of the rally was based on the quote of President Bush “Not on my watch”.  The experience from the project became a great driving force behind the spirit which has inspired and nurtured a renewed commitment to helping.
